That’s the proud boast of the Pater Hall Trust about the many
hundreds of people who use the Community Centre at the heart of
Pembroke Dock every week.
For over 150 years the Pater Hall has been the hub of community
activity in the town from it’s early period as a Temperance Hall in
the heyday of Ship building activity in the town right up to today
with the completion of new facilities in an ongoing EU - backed
campaign to completely modernise the Hall.
The latest range of new facilities is all at the Dimond Street end of
the building and includes a new disabled entrance from Lewis
Street, a new disabled toilet, new Gents and Ladies toilets, a new
Kitchen upstairs at the Meyrick Owen Suite and a new kitchen
serving the main hall. In
addition there is a new booking
office, a new stage control room
and a smart new look to the
entrance foyer.
The modern upgrades are all designed to make
current users have a more enjoyable experience and
attract new people into using the hall. It seems to be
working as already there is a new Line Dancing Club,
a new Musical club for Toddlers and social event
bookings are up.
The hall has had it’s sadder times – during the war it
was bombed to smithereens and after the war the
Temperance Society, then in decline,
decided to present it to the town and
the Old Borough Council took it over
and rebuilt it. Twenty Eight years ago after local government re-
organisation, the Town Council took it on and eight years ago transferred a
25 year lease to the Pater Hall Trust.
With generous financial backing from the Town Council, the Trust has
been able to get further funding from bodies such as the Welsh
Government. This latest work has been part funded by the European
Regional Development fund through the Welsh
Government as part of Pembrokeshire County
Council's Haven Towns Regeneration scheme. The
project is aimed at boosting the commercial
competitiveness of Pembroke Dock, and making it
more attractive for investors, shoppers and visitors.
There are still more improvements to do at the Hall,
but the current feelgood factor which many people
are commenting about, is a great sign that the many
people currently enjoying their clubs, classes and
societies in the Pater Hall will still be enjoying them
for many more years to come.
