Milford Haven Mayor's Christmas 2011

“The recent arrival of Santa, the children’s lantern parade and the turning on of the Town’s lights brought Milfordians out in their hundreds as usual. “We are fortunate to have organisations like the Town Band, the Stratford Players, the Round Table and Neyland Ladies Choir who give their unfailing support each year. Many  compliments have been received from visitors commenting on how the townsfolk got involved and the community spirit shown. “I think it is important, in these difficult times, that we make all we can of these events and hang on to that great feeling of community and belonging that they bring. It is these feelings that helped the town win the battle for the Coastguard station, securing not only local jobs, but also a safer community. The town can be proud of the stance it took and the efforts of so many people to ensure we got the right result. “Looking ahead, work has, at last, started on Milford’s new surgery and this time next year we will have one of the most modern health centres in the country and I hope this is just the start. Many people are working behind the scenes to bring about the regeneration of our town. It will be a long and slow process but it will happen if we all work together and show that spirit. “Wendy and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe, peaceful and happy new year.”

Johnston Scouts Tidy up Tyres 22nd May 2010

As part of the recent Wales Sustainability Week, First Johnston Scouts have undertaken one of their biggest and most challenging projects yet: to clean up the banks along the road to the old mine depot at Blackbridge in Milford Haven. Over the years the lane has been subject to substantial fly-tipping which detracts from this attractive woodland area.     Last week sixteen scouts rolled up their sleeves and got rather messy as they retrieved 70 tyres which had been dumped down the bank. As well as this, they managed to collect more than half a skip load of household waste including an exercise bike, paddling pool, traffic cones, hundreds of beer cans and an old television complete with remote control.     The waste and tyres were collected by Pembrokeshire County Council for safe disposal. The tyres will be recycled by a local company and made into useful products such as rubber matting and garden furniture. Tyre amnesties taking place during the week commencing 24 May will give householders an opportunity to get rid of tyres for free, preventing them from being dumped in future.     First Johnston Scouts first got involved with Tidy Towns when the project began in 2008. Over the years, they have cleaned up many of Pembrokeshire’s more remote beaches as well as local footpaths within Johnston.   For more information about Tidy Towns contact Mari Williams on 01646 681949.
