Pennar a little History

Before 1815, the site of modern Pembroke Dock and its nearby settlements was mostly farmland. A small hoard of Roman coins found at Pennar suggests local farmers trading with Romanised Carmarthen. In 1595, shellfish from the oyster beds at Pennar Mouth were known to be particularly "bigg and sweet". "The choicest oysters" were still being fished there in 1897. The name Pennar ("headland") is Welsh. Like Llanreath and Llanion, it dates from before the Norman invasion of 1093. Some early shipwrights, rowing back and fore from Milford, would land at Pennar Point then walk via Llanreath to the Dockyard. One of this route's attractions was the Dolphin at Llanreath Point. Publican Mr David Price lived to be 96, remembered marking out the Dockyard site in 1813, and sold beer "wisely diluted" - thereby avoiding fights on his premises. . RONALDINHO VISITS PENNAR Visitors to Pennar’s second Annual Fun Day on July 1st may have thought they were suffering from the heat of the sun when they spotted Ronaldinho in amongst the crowd. On a second look they would have seen he was taking place in the annual ‘Dress the Scarecrow’ competition.      Committee Member Carolyn Fortune said “ Ronaldinho was in excellent company this year, other scarecrows to dress included David Beckham, Wayne Rooney Ronaldo and Nick Ainger. This year’s theme was the World Cup, all ages really enjoy dressing the ‘crows up and having a laugh while they’re doing it” Younger visitors also enjoyed having Cleopatra, Beastly Behaviour’s boa constrictor wrapped around their neck and watching the Punch and Judy show, which was written and performed by young people from Pennar. The weather was glorious and just under £200 was raised for hall funds, raising money isn’t the main aim of the day though, giving the residents and visitors of Pennar a really good day out is. The committee would love to hear what other events people from Pennar would like put on, so if you’ve got an idea contact Liz Cook on 01646 621811.

Pennar & Bufferland Coast-Care

More information from Maggie Thomas 01646 686721 We hold regular litter picks to remove rubbish and litter and  the group has bought  some litter pickers, like robot arms, so  our backs don't ache! The council will collect any bags or other rubbish from the beach. If you want to help on a Saturday morning, please ask  when the next event is planned.  We usually work from 10-12 noon and then have sandwiches and a chat at The Sherlock Holmes! Pembroke River is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).  There are extensive areas of saltmarsh and  mudflats which support migratory waterfowl and waders such as wigeon, shelduck, curlew, and oyster catchers.  There are also nationally rare and scarce plants. Otters use the river for resting and feeding. A BIG thank you to Chris and Will from Keep Wales Tidy who  encourage us, Texaco who gave us gloves and Pembrokeshire County Council who supply the bags and take the rubbish away. If you see anyone dumping rubbish anywhere please contact Pembrokeshire County Council.  Offenders can be prosecuted.  If you want to help with our next Coast-Care event please come along to the next meeting or contact one of the group. Hello from the Hall Committee, just a short email to let you know what we have happening at the Hall over the next few months. Saturday 7th February we have the folk singer Pete Morton returning to the hall to play a gig.  Pete is well known on the British Folk circuit and last year went down really well at Fishguard Folk Festival, reaching a newer audience locally.  Tickets are £10 each and are available from Main Street Music in Pembroke and on the door on the night.  Doors open at 7.30pm.  Sunday 8th February we have a Valentine's Craft Fayre at the hall.  This follows our extremely successful Christmas Craft Fayre in late November with many people who attended expressing they would like more craft fayres at the hall, so we are happy to oblige.  Doors open at Noon and entry is free. Saturday 28th March we have Al Lewis playing a gig at the hall, Al is touring Britain this Spring and in the past he has supported Paper Aeroplanes locally.  Tickets are £10 and available from Main Street Music or on the door on the night.  Doors open at 7.30pm and there is a licensed bar and support is provided by local harpist Jess Ward. Our Annual Fun Day is being held this year on Saturday 5th September and the Christmas Craft Fayre is on 5th December from 2-6pm.

Look after Pennar and look after your Pets

Dog mess is unpleasant on our streets and footpaths.  We need everyone to help to make Pennar and Bufferland a clean place for children to play and for us all to walk.  If your dog fouls in a public place – please clean it up.  Bagged dog waste can be placed in any litter bin. Some tips for dog owners Always remember to carry a poop bag Dispose of the bag in your dustbin Always clean up after your dog Your dog should be taken out to exercise, not to foul Teach your dog to foul in your garden Try to make sure that your dog never fouls in public places Remember you could be guilty of an offence if you fail to remove and dispose of your dog faeces Worm your dog – dogs that are not wormed regularly can carry infections  If you need more advice, contact our local Dog Warden Debbie Hart at Pembrokeshire County Council telephone: (+44) 01437 775483 www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk or National Canine Defence League,  17 Wakley Street, London, EC1V 7RQ Telephone: (+44) 020 7837 0006    www.ncdl.org.uk Rubbish ....
