The "Cambridge Tower" Front Street Pembroke Dock

9 FRONT STREET GUN TOWER

Situated at the western end of Front Street and commonly referred to as the 'Martello Tower' it was built in 1849/50 at a cost of £9,230. This tower is in fact a "Cambridge Tower" It was designed to be armed by three Blomefield 32 pounders. On the upper open gun platform and four 12 pdr. brass Howitzers in the second level officers' and other ranks quarters. The Gun Tower was but one of a series of fortifications built to protect the dockyard. While the fortifications became known as 'Palmerston Follies', it should be remembered that in 1797 the French did invade and land men at Fishguard. While the Blomefields and the Howitzers never fired a shot in anger, during the second world war twin Lewis Guns, manned by men of the  Royal Air Force Regiment, were mounted and used as part of the Haven’s defence against the German bombing raiders.
