8. FRONT STREET The following is an extract from the diary of Mr John Narberth of Pembroke: "On the 14th day of May, 1814, Mr Lowless and myself left poor old Pembroke to commence its rival, so on that day was the first shaving cut and first window frame made by John Narbeth. and by September 25th, 1814, was the first four houses ready. Mr Thomas the foreman of shipwrights' wife came that day to take possession, and we drank to the success of the first house in Pater." Initially the street was named Thomas Street. At the eastern end of the street is a redundant dry dock, the sole reminder of the Town's private shipbuilding past. At one time the street had several Taverns and a Mission Hall. In order to compensate residents for the loss of landing space where fishermen and traders were able to sell their wares prior to the dockyard being enclosed, in 1927 the Government built the 'Common Hard'. Unfortunately the historic 'Hard' was lost when the new dock quay was constructed. |
