4. HOBBS POINT Built 1830 as a 'Fitting out' area for ships built in the dockyard. It was only able to cater for two vessels while CARR JETTY which was built in 1898 could service up to five ships. In 1837 with the completion of Telford's road from St. Clears Pembroke Dock became a 'Post Town'. The London Mail Coach was scheduled to arrive at Hobbs Point at 12.34 hrs having travelled from London via Gloucester and depart precisely at 01.42 hrs. Initially the mail was dispatched to Ireland by Sailing Packets until steam driven ships took over the passage. Prior to the building of the Cleddau Bridge a car ferry operated between Hobbs Point and Neyland. Today Hobbs Point is mainly used by leisure boat sailors and people fishing off the Jetty while Pembroke Haven Yacht Club occupy the building alongside the marine chandlers. |
