Dock Gates from the Barrack Hill

14. ORIGINAL MAIN ENTRANCE TO ROYAL DOCKYARD
On the west side of the entrance was the former residence of the Captain Superintendent while eastward leading to the 'Dockyard Chapel' is the 'Terrace' with its avenue of trees and Georgian houses that were occupied by the old Royal Dockyard's principal officers. Designed by Admiralty architects the houses were extremely well built. As well as using iron rafters to support the roofs the architects also implemented an innovatory fire precaution system consisting of sand filled ceiling fillets. The historic Georgian houses, Chapel and the other principle former Royal Dockyard buildings that are to be found within the old dockyard walls are part of a Townscape Heritage enhancement programme, much of which has already been completed. It is also planned to repair and reinstate the architectural detail of the Flying Boat Hangers.
