St Marys Church

29. ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH
Built in 1847. With the growing expansion of the Dockyard coinciding with the catastrophic Irish Potato Famine, many suffering Irish families settled in the town and sought work in the expanding Dockyard and flourishing town. It is said that every working male member gave a day's pay every month towards the building of St. Mary's, while there were many who volunteered their labour. In 1926 St Mary's saw a number of changes applying mainly to the church's interior. The most appealing being the stained glass windows in the eastern wall that replaced the nondescript double windows. Buried along side the church by special dispensation is the lone grave of Father Oliver Murphy who served St Mary’s as its Parish Priest for 44 years
