ZION FREE CHURCH Pembroke Dock

28. ZION FREE CHURCH
Having outgrown their Ebenezer Chapel which was built in 1820 at the southern end of Wesley Row, and with the benefit of £350 government compensation paid to demolish Ebenezer which stood within a specified distance from the projected 'Defensible Barracks' site, the Methodists built their new church in Meyrick Street. Because of the chapel's growing congregation it was enlarged in 1867 to the present imposing building which seats 1340 people. In 1881 it was redesigned with new sloping seats replacing the old pews. Wesley Chapel as it was known was closed and put on the market in 1986 when it was purchased and renamed 'Zion Free Church'. Supposedly the trustees of 'Wesley Chapel' required that the 'Wesley' name was changed. Prior to the chapel's purchase the basement of the chapel was used as the Town's Library until it was claimed that the building was unsafe for public use. The building was bought by Mr Hugh Michael who despite the sorry and deteriorating aspects of the building, with his own hands and the help of volunteers the church has been restored to its former resplendence. He has also established a vibrant evangelical and caring fellowship and following.
