25. BETHEL BAPTIST CHAPEL Pembroke Dock

 25. BETHEL BAPTIST CHAPEL
The chapel was formed by a group of dissenting Bethany members who decided to start their own break away Baptist church in 1840. A neo-gothic styled building, it was first built in 1844 but it was rebuilt in 1872. Until they built Bethel their new 400 seater chapel at the junction of Meyrick and Bush Street, they met in a house behind what was know as the Edinburgh Hotel. In 1872 during a fierce gale a large part of the church's roof was blown off. Following this calamity an architect was commissioned to redesign the church as it stands today. It is also claimed that in 1857 Bethel had a harmonium and that it was the first nonconformist church in Pembrokeshire to have a 'keyed instrument'.
