FIRST NATIONAL SCHOOL Pembroke Dock

22. FIRST NATIONAL SCHOOL
While a number of private and indifferent schools existed in the new town it was felt that there was a need for a National School. Land at the base of Barrack Hill was leased from the then government and the school was opened in 1845-46. Because of overcrowding and dissention supposedly due to its Church of England influence, a 'British' school was founded in Meyrick Street. In 1901 the 'Old British School' in Meyrick Street was demolished and in 1904 it was replaced by the 'Coronation Boys School'. The girls and infants of the period went to Albion Square Board School (circa 1876-1896).  Now part of the site is occupied by the Jumping beans Nursery School
