From 12 to 19th May 2009 the Mayor of
Pembroke Dock, Councillor Pam George, the Deputy
Mayor of Pembroke Dock, Councillor Maureen Colgan
together with the Chairman of the Joint Tourism and
Twinning Committee for Pembroke and Pembroke Dock,
Councillor Aden Brinn, visited Pembroke Malta. The
visit was funded by members of the two Town Councils
themselves. The aim was to continue progress in
improving contacts between the twinned towns. This
year the Twinning Committee are looking at ways of
improving the liaison between the Primary Schools in
the twinned towns as well as looking at special
needs provision in both primary and secondary
schools. Pembroke Malta is establishing a new Public
Library for its residents and Pembroke and Pembroke
Dock Town Councils will be considering in due course
ideas for sending suitable books to help improve the
English language facilities which are being offered
to residents. Following discussions with the Head
Teacher of the Junior School in Pembroke Malta, Ms M
Lapira, it was also hoped that Pembroke and Pembroke
Dock would also be able to send English language
books suitable for their primary school library. In
2010 it is anticipated that there will be a visit of
pupils aged 10 – 11 together with their parents and
some teachers, to both Gelli Aur School in Pembroke
and Pembroke Dock Primary School. Pembroke, Malta,
Primary School are hoping to move into new premises
in September this year with some of the ideas for
the new school being based on the development of the
new school in Pembroke Dock.
The Town Councillors from
Pembroke and Pembroke Dock were able to meet some of
their counterparts in Pembroke, Malta to discuss
educational matters. Later the party visited the
British High Commission to meet with the High
Commissioner, Ms Louise Stanton, to discuss the
proposals for closer working between the primary
schools. There was also a discussion on how young
people can be involved in investigating Climate
Change and putting forward new environmental ideas
to help cut carbon emissions etc.
The Mayor of
Pembroke Dock (Councillor Pam George), the Deputy
Mayor of Pembroke Dock (Councillor Maureen Colgan),
the Chairman of the Joint Tourism and Twinning
Committee (Councillor Aden Brinn) together with the
Town Clerk of Pembroke Dock (Mr Ian Jones) later met
the Officer in Charge of the Sea Cadet Unit in
Malta, Mr James Davies, to discuss closer
co-operation between their Unit and the Sea Cadets
at TS Warrior in Pembroke Dock. It is hoped that
later in 2010 there will be a twinning exchange
between the two units where members will have the
opportunity of developing new skills by visiting
each other.
