Your next Mayor 2010/2011

Some sterling work in her first few years on Pembroke Dock Town Council has resulted in Pennar’s Maureen Colgan being selected as the town’s first citizen for the year 2010 to 2011.  Fellow councillors unanimously voted her in as mayor after seeing her take every opportunity to serve the town in a number of roles since the last election.

She stands on the tourism committee, the planning committee and the Memorial Park committee and is the council’s representative on Age Concern, The Band Trust, and the Louisa Sunders Trust.  She is also a governor for St Mary’s school and has just joined as a Trustee of The Pater Hall.  On top of that she is a member of two choirs and a keen supporter of the Friends of the South Pembrokeshire Hospital and also the WRVS.

Officially Maureen is “retired” but that description seems nonsense when you consider that, apart from all her voluntary work, Maureen has four sons, three of them married and seven grandchildren.  Life is a hectic schedule already, but she will readily tell you that she loves meeting so many people and doing her best for the town.  There’s no doubt it will get busier still next year as she takes on the mayoral duties.

She had the misfortune to have her home badly damaged by fire almost a year ago, when on a twinning visit to Pembroke in Malta and it took many months of work before she could return to live in the house.  It showed a lot about her energy and good humour, that she continued all of her public work while this was going on.  It is this energy that councillors were sure she would bring to her year of office.

Elected as deputy Mayor at the same meeting was Cllr Andrew McNaughton, Market Ward, another relatively new face on the council.  He too has shouldered a number of roles since joining the council.  He sits on the planning committee, the personnel committee and the committee which considers the many policy documents sent to the council for consultation – a necessary but somewhat thankless job.

He is also on the joint Twinning and Tourism committee with Pembroke Town Council and has just assumed the chairman’s position on that.  Readers of this article may recognise Andrew in his working role as “The P.C. Doctor” – computer engineer and IT consultant.
